This is a children’s picture book that retells Brundibar, an opera performed frequently in Terezin. Two children need milk for their sick mother, but have no money to purchase it. Their attempts to sing for money are foiled by Brundibar. Eventually a group of animals convinces these two children to recruit a group of children to sing enmasse.
Maurice Bernard Sendak was born June 10, 1928 – died May 8, 2012. Sendak was an American illustrator and writer of children’s books. He became widely known for his book Where the Wild Things Are, first published in 1963. Born to Jewish-Polish parents, his childhood was affected by the death of many of his family members during the Holocaust. Besides Where the Wild Things Are, Sendak also wrote works such as In the Night Kitchen and Outside over There, and illustrated Little Bear.
Anthony Robert “Tony” Kushner was born July 16, 1956. Kushner is an American playwright and screenwriter. He received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1993 for his play Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes. He co-authored with Eric Roth the screenplay for the 2005 film Munich, and he wrote the screenplay for the 2012 film Lincoln, both critically acclaimed movies. For his work, he received a National Medal of Arts from President Barack Obama in 2013.
