Photographer Maurice Seymour worked from the mid-1930s until the 1970s photographing performers who worked in the nightclubs and theatres of Chicago. Seymour was born in Russia and together with his brother was apprenticed to a photographer. Later on the two brothers set up in business together. When the ballet Russe de Monte Carlo came to Chicago he was chosen to photograph them and these photos are well known worldwide for their distinctive style and lighting. This was his first ballet assignment and it remained the focus of much of his work.


Maurice Seymour was known as “the photographer to the celebrities. Seymour trained his lenses on all kinds of celebrities – actors, politicians, comedians, showgirls, judges and generals – while focusing on theatrical photography. His ballet pictures appeared in two books, Seymour on Ballet and Ballet Portraits, with the actual photographs being displayed in 1968 at the Chicago Historical Society. And for years, young performers came to him for publicity shots. Mr. Seymour also took photos of stars performing in Chicago, including Bob Hope, Bing Crosby.
