GEORGE ALLAN ENGLAND AUTOGRAPH


American author George Allan England was born in Nebraska in 1877 and died in New Hampshire in 1936. In between he was educated at Harvard University, where he received a masters degree in English Literature in 1903. England roamed the world as an explorer/journalist and many of his articles appeared through the 20’s in The Saturday Evening Post. It was as a journalist that England first came to Newfoundland. He later wrangled his way on to a sealing vessel and wrote what Ebbitt Cutler, in his introduction to the 1969 reprint of Vikings of the Ice under the title The Greatest Hunt in the World described as “… the only detailed eyewitness description of day-by-day life aboard a wooden wall ever to be written.” In 1912, England began publishing his still popular science-fiction trilogy, Darkness and Dawn. His other books include The Golden Blight (1912), The Air Trust (1915), Bill Jenkins, Buccaneer (1917), Cursed (1919), Keep Off the Grass (1919), The Flying Legion (1920), The White Wilderness (1922), Adventure Isle (1925) and Isle of Romance (1929).
