ALFRED SANTELL AUTOGRAPHED STATIONARY

Alfred-Santell-Letter-with-.jpg

Alfred Santell was an American director born September 14, 1895 in San Francisco, California. He directed over 60 films, including The Patent Leather Kid (1927), Body and Soul (1931), and Beyond the Blue Horizon (1942). He died on June 19, 1981 in Salinas, California. Alfred Santell enrolled in Los Angeles University with the intention of becoming an architect. However, Santell derived more pleasure from writing and publishing short stories than drawing up blueprints. In the infant film industry from 1914, the teen-aged Santell worked as a jack-of-all-trades at the Lubin Studios, then went on direct one- and two-reelers for Mack Sennett and other producers. While at Kalem, Santell piloted several entries in the long-running "Ham and Bud" comedy series. His first feature-length directorial assignment, which he also scripted, was 1920's It Might Happen to You. Santell spent the 1920s as the busy but relatively anonymous director of such self-starting luminaries as Gloria Swanson, Richard Barthelmess and George Arliss. He made a graceful transition to talkies in 1929, continuing to turn out fine work for MGM, Fox, Paramount, RKO and the rest of the front-rank studios. Thanks to their current public-domain status, Santell's unstagey film adaptations of Maxwell Anderson's Winterset (1935) and Eugene O'Neill's The Hairy Ape (1943) are among the director's best-known works. Having directed the first talkie version of Jack London's The Sea Wolf in 1930, Santell was a natural choice to helm the 1944 biopic Jack London, which has also become a familiar TV and home-video attraction since slipping into public domain. Alfred Santell both produced and directed many of his later theatrical features, including Mexicana (1945) and That Brennan Girl (1946); after 1950, he worked exclusively in television. Original Alfred Santell Autographed Memorandum, dated 1932. Memorandum letterhead as follows: Fox Film Corporation Studio Hollywood California Also included is a Cigar Band labeled ALFRED SANTELL Regular Price - $ 199.99 / Sale Price - $ 95.00.

GEORGE M. COHAN AUTOGRAPH

George-m-cohan-.jpg

George Michael Cohan was born July 3, 1878 – died November 5, 1942. Cohan was a United States entertainer, playwright, composer, lyricist, actor, singer, dancer, director, and producer of Irish descent. Known as "the man who owned Broadway" in the decade before World War I, he is considered the father of American musical comedy. Cohan was the pioneer of the musical theater libretto. He is mostly remembered for his songs, later interpolated into musicals such as Anything Goes, Guys and Dolls, and Hello Dolly! However, he invented the "book musical," becoming the first showman to bridge the gaps between drama and music, operetta and extravaganza. Cohan and his sister Josie in the 1890sMore than three decades before Agnes De Mille choreographed Oklahoma!, Cohan used dance not merely as razzle-dazzle but to advance the plot. The engaging books of his musicals supported the scores that yielded so many popular songs. As a storyteller, Cohan's main characters were "average Joes and Janes".

KING VIDOR AUTOGRAPH

king_vidor_s.png

King Wallis Vidor was born February 8, 1894 – died November 1, 1982. Vidor was an acclaimed American film director whose career spanned nearly seven decades. He was born in Galveston, Texas, where he survived the great Galveston Hurricane of 1900. His grandfather, Charles Vidor, was a refugee of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 who settled in Galveston in the early 1850s. A freelance newsreel cameraman and cinema projectionist, he made his debut as a director in 1913 with Hurricane in Galveston. In Hollywood from 1915, he worked on a variety of film-related jobs before directing a feature film, The Turn in the Road, in 1919. A successful mounting of Peg o' My Heart in 1922 got him a long term contract with Goldwyn Studios, later to be absorbed into MGM. Three years later he made The Big Parade, among the most acclaimed war films of the silent era, and a tremendous commercial success. This success established him as one of MGM's top studio directors for the next decade. In 1928, Vidor received his first Oscar nomination, for The Crowd, widely regarded as his masterpiece and one of the greatest American silent films. In the same year, he made the classic Show People, the last silent film of Marion Davies, a comedy about the film industry in which Vidor had a cameo as himself. Vidor's first sound film was Hallelujah!, a groundbreaking film featuring an African American cast, and in which he established the new language for sound films (Which is still used today by most directors). His directorial career extended well in to the sound era and he continued making feature films until the late 1950s. Some of his better known sound films include Stella Dallas, Our Daily Bread, The Citadel, Duel in the Sun, The Fountainhead, and War and Peace. He directed the Kansas sequences in The Wizard of Oz (including "Over the Rainbow") when director Victor Fleming had to replace George Cukor on Gone with the Wind, but never received screen credit. Vidor entered in the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest career as a film director: beginning in 1913 with Hurricane in Galveston and ending in 1980 with a short documentary on painting entitled The Metaphor.
